To The Editor:
As always, thank you for the excellent coverage
of the neighborhood and the issues relevant to Tribeca.
As the parent of a student at the O. Henry Building on West 17th Street,
I think the coverage of the school issues is incomplete until we thank
the students and staff at that building who shared their facilities with
IS 89.
My son has been a student at the New York City Museum School for four
years. The staff and students of the Museum School and the Lab School
welcomed IS 89 and gave up classrooms to accomodate the school. The building
was fully utilized before IS 89 moved in, but the staff and students were
generous and cheerful in adapting to the overcrowding contingent on adding
a third school to the building.
Comments from parents and students in the Trib and other papers suggest
that the building is dirty and its Chelsea location is unsafe. In my personal
experience, neither is the case.
I feel confident that other parents, and staff and students, join me in
wishing the IS 89 students and staff all the best as they return to their
own building, despite concerns about the environment.
