Experimental Film Screening
Dublin born filmmaker Moira Tierney's films will be shown on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at The Tank, 279 Church St. Over the past decade Tierney has produced over 22 films, ranging from personal portraits to socio-political commentaries. For more information, go to www.thetanknyc.org.
A Poet Speaks on Langston Hughes
E. Ethelbert Miller, poet and director of the African American Resource Center at Howard University, will explore the life and work of Langston Hughes at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center, 199 Chambers Street, on March 6 at 7 p.m. Miller will offer several new interpretations of some of Hughes' poems while asking: "How does the work of Langston Hughes continue to help us understand who we are as Americans?" An audience Q&A and book-signing will follow. Admission is $5 for Lower Manhattan residents, free to students, and $10 for general admission.
Infant and Child CPR
The Jewish Community Project is holding a three-hour workshop on child CPR, rescue breathing, Heimlich and first aid. The workshop is March 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $75. Call 212-334-3522 or e-mail info@jcpdowntown.org for more information.
Precinct Council
The 1st Precinct Community Council, a forum for those interested in police issues in the precinct, is seeking members. Film Fest Volunteers
The Tribeca Film Festival is seeking volunteers for this season. Festival representatives will be on hand at two upcoming meetings at Tribeca Cinemas, 54 Varick St. at Laight, for questions and applications. Surrogate’s Court Tour
Tour New York City’s 1907 Surrogate’s Court Building at Chambers and Centre Streets on Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. A baroque marble staircase inspired by Garnier’s Paris Opera House, lavish mosaic murals and allegorical sculptures are some of the impressive features.
