Ravaged Condos Set to Be Restored

POSTED JUNE 1, 2007

“The plan is to rehabilitate the building. It’s going to be a long process,” said Tom Currier, a co-developer of 148 Chambers Street, the 7-story building ravaged by fire on May 4.

Following an investigation of the fire that Currier said yielded no cause, the building was returned to the owners late last month, and the task of cleaning and restoring the structure can begin. Currier said fire gutted the building from the fourth floor up, and water damaged it from the third floor down.

The building, which was due to begin occupancy on July 1, was vacant when the fire broke out.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. One hundred forty firefighters responded to the 3-alarm blaze that took three hours to extinguish.

Apartment prices in the building were to start at $1.85 million.
