A 'Y' is Heading for Tribeca
POSTED MARCH 2, 2007
The 92nd Street Y is moving two of its most prominent cultural programs to Tribeca, as reported in the Trib last month.
On March 1, the Y announced that Makor—the Hebrew word for “source,” geared to New Yorkers in their 20s and 30s—and Daytime—geared toward baby boomers—will take up residence at 200 Hudson St. next fall.
The Y recently signed a lease with Trinity Real Estate for 15,800 square feet on the ground floor. The programs’ uptown facility, which was 22,000 square feet, was sold to the City University of New York last fall.
The Y announced that the new facility will include a cafe, a screening area for films and readings, a music performance space with a bar, a lecture space, an art gallery, and classrooms.
While specific programming has not been announced, it appears that the new facility’s programming will in many ways mirror current offerings. These include theatre performances, lectures, children’s activities, wine and cheese tastings, musical performances, and movie series, including documentaries, shorts, and other films, and special events like speed dating.
Makor and Daytime also offer dozens of classes, ranging from cooking to acting to language instruction to singing lessons.
Makor events generally take place on evenings and weekends, when young people in their 20s and 30s are not working.
Daytime events geared toward retirees are often held on weekdays.
The new venue is being designed by Kostow Greenwood Architects, and the Y will seek LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for the building.
