Three-Alarm Fire Strikes Chambers Street Building
POSTED MAY 10, 2007

A seven-story building under co-op conversion at 148 Chambers Street was the site of shooting flames and billowing smoke on Friday, May 4 as firefighters battled for nearly three hours to tame the three-alarm blaze.
Two firefighters were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and released, according to a Fire Department spokesman. The building was unoccupied and no one else was hurt. No cause had been determined.
More than 30 units and nearly 140 firefighters responded to the fire, which spread from the fourth to sixth floor of the building. The blaze began at about 9:30 in the evening and was declared extinguished at 12:15 a.m.
The structure was being converted to seven condominium units, starting at $1.85 million. Following the incident, a notice on the building's Web site said the project was "temporarily off the market."
