Barnes & Noble Coming to '5B'

by Etta Sanders

Tribeca will have its own Barnes & Noble. The bookseller signed a lease to open a store in the development planned for Site 5B, just south of P.S. 234, according to a source familiar with the development plans.

It is the second major store announced for the site, which is bordered by Warren, Greenwich, Murray and West Streets. A 55,000-square-foot Whole Foods supermarket is planned for the ground floor of a new building on Warren Street.

The Barnes & Noble will occupy the second floor.

Both stores are expected to open by late 2006 or early 2007.

Additionally, a Bank of New York branch will be moving into the groundfloor space of a new residential building at the corner of Greenwich and Murray Streets, according to the same source.

A spokeswoman for Barnes & Noble would not confirm the deal, but said the chain is always looking for new locations.

For Tribeca residents, having a large bookstore in the neighborhood will fill a void left by the loss of the Borders at the World Trade Center. Borders relocated to a building on Broadway near Wall Street.
