City Announces Downtown Street Closures for 9/11

The New York City Police Department on Sept. 9 announced several street closures Downtown for Sept. 11, when the city will host a series of events at the World Trade Center site and in Battery Park commemorating the terrorist attack and honoring victims and rescue workers. The events will include an afternoon visit by President Bush.

West Street from Canal Street to Battery Park will be closed on Wednesday from 8 to 11 a.m. and from 4 p.m. until the completion of ceremonies at Ground Zero. West Street between West Thames and Canal streets will also be closed on Thursday, Sept. 12, from 7:25 to 9:30 p.m.

Battery Place between West Street and Broadway, and State Street between Broadway and Water Street, will be closed from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Pedestrian access into and out of Battery Park City may be restricted to particular blocks, though the city has not announced checkpoint policies. Residents are advised to carry identification with them to move around Lower Manhattan and to get to and from their homes on Wednesday.

Additional street closures may be announced on Tuesday.

On Sept. 11 there will also be periodic disruptions to ferry service into and out of the terminals at the World Financial Center, Pier A and Pier 11. And on Sept. 12 there will be no ferry service at the World Financial Center after 4:30 p.m. Passengers should use Pier A or Pier 11. Several streets in midtown will also be closed all day from Tuesday Sept. 10 to Friday, Sept. 13: 45th and 46th streets between Vanderbilt and Madison avenues; Vanderbilt Avenue between 45th and 46th Streets; 48th and 49th streets between Lexington and Park avenues and 49th and 50th streets between Park and Madison avenues.

The police advise drivers to expect long traffic delays in many parts of the city and urge people to use public transportation to and from Lower Manhattan.
