'Windows' Workers Now Owners
The restaurant, set to open in Tribeca early next year, is yet to be named.
But its menu of international and American cuisine has been set. So, too,
has its mission-to employ as many former Windows on the World workers
as possible.
A group of more than 40 former waiters, servers, busboys and other workers
displaced since Sept. 11 have taken co-operative ownership of what is
being described as a "fine dining" restaurant at 407 Greenwich
St.
After the restaurant atop the World Trade Center was destroyed, many of
the workers took jobs elsewhere and most for lower pay, said Stefan Mailvaganam.
Mailvaganam is a project manager with the Restaurant Opportunity Center,
a group formed to provide support for displaced immigrant workers from
Windows on the World and other World Trade Center restaurants. With the
group's help and an anchor investment from a co-operative restaurant in
Italy, the Windows group has formed what Mailvaganam says is the city's
first co-operatively owned restaurant.
"The appropriate place for this restaurant is as close to the trade
center as possible," he said.
About 300 workers were employed at Windows on the World atop the World
Trade Center's north tower, he said. Seventy-three were killed.
