Remembering 9/11 With Songs, Silence and a Field of Flags

On this sixth anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, there will be many ways for Downtown residents and workers to remember and reflect on that day. Here are some activities planned for Lower Manhattan.
Reading of the Names at the WTC site
Beginning at 8 a.m., names of victims are read aloud. At 8:46 a.m.: moment of silence for the first plane that hit the towers. At 9:03 a.m.: moment of silence for the second plane that hit. At 9:59 a.m.: moment of silence for the fall of the south tower. At 10:29 a.m.: moment of silence for the fall of the north tower. The program will end with taps and a musical performance. Zuccotti Park, Liberty and Church Sts.
Memorial Service and Bells
Rev. Dr. James H. Cooper, rector, will lead an interfaith service at 8:35 a.m. St. Paul’s Chapel Churchyard, Broadway at Fulton Street. The 12 changing bells will be rung in honor of those who died on Sept. 11. There will be 3,018 changes, one for each life lost. Trinity Church, Broadway at Wall Street.
The September Concert
There will be more than 100 concerts in New York City (as well as others around the world) organized by The September Concert, which began on the first anniversary of 9/11. For locations and times, go to septemberconcert.org.
Glee Club Concert
The Down Town Glee Club will give a commemorative performance at 10 a.m. Trinity Church, Broadway at Wall.
The British Memorial Garden Trust’s Memorial Concert
Commemorative concert and ceremony starts at 12:30 p.m. British music, violinist Laura McGhee and the New York Scottish Pipes and Drums Band, among others. Hanover Square (William and Pearl Sts.) britishmemorialgarden.org.
Open Music Ensemble
A quiet instrumental music program designed to encourage reflection and healing. 1:30–3:30 p.m. Trinity Church, Broadway at Wall Street.
Battery Park City Community Observance
Walk along the esplanade begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by a musical program. Esplanade Plaza (south side of North Cove).
NYC 9/11 Memorial Field
From Sept. 7 to Sept. 13, American flags with the names of victims of 9/11 will fly in the north end of Battery Park, next to the bronze sphere, which was salvaged from the WTC site. The flags will be flown in batches of 500 and rotated each day.
