Allures of Nature and Art in Battery City's Parks

With a 32-acre garden teeming with 400 species of flowers, shrubs and trees and a river with more than 30 species of fish, Battery Park City’s parks beckons to be enjoyed. Here is a sampling of some activities sponsored by the BPC Parks Conservancy. All are free but some require registration (212-267-9700). For more activities, go to www.bpcparks.org.

VOLLEYBALL AFTER WORK Good-natured game for men and women. Scorekeeper and balls provided. No experience necessary. 9/3, 9/10 9/17, 9/24, 6-7pm. Esplanade Plaza (bet. Liberty and Vesey St.).
Tai Chi Learn the ancient Chinese martial art with an expert. No experience necessary. 9/5, 9/12, 9/19, 9/26, 8:30-9:30am. Esplanade Plaza (bet. Liberty and Vesey St.).

FIGURE AL FRESCO Learn or practice figure drawing using pencil or charcoal with an artist instructor. For All skill levels welcome. Materials provided. 9/5, 9/19, 9/26, 2:30-4:30pm. DRAWING IN THE PARK Use pencil, charcoal, watercolor or pastels. Instruction and materials provided. 9/6, 9/13, 9/20, 9/27, 2:30-4:30pm. South Cove (on the river bet. First and Third Place).

PUBLIC ART TOUR Led by an art expert. 9/6, 11am; 9/29, 2pm. The Real World Park in Rockefeller Park (at the foot of Chambers St).

FIX YOUR OWN BIKE Consult an expert and learn to make simple repairs. 9/15, 10am. Wagner Park (southern tip of BPC).

BIRDWATCHING Led by a birder/naturalist. Binoculars available. 9/15, 11am. Wagner Park (southern tip of BPC).

NATURE OBSERVATION Identify trees, birds and butterflies, and learn simple drawing techniques for keeping a nature journal. Bring sketching materials. Registration required. 9/16, 3:30-5pm. Meet at BPCPC offices, 2 South End Ave.

GARDEN TOUR Learn about the park’s innovations in organic gardening. Led by horticulturalist. 9/17, 9/24, 12:30-1:30pm. Rockefeller Park (off Battery Place).

FISHING Rod and bait provided. 9/21, 11:30-1:30pm. Wagner Park (southern tip of BPC).

SUNSET NATURE WALK A naturalist will identify migrating birds and butterflies. View setting sun through a filtered telescope. Registration required. 9/28, 6-7:15 pm. Wagner Park (southern tip of BPC).

RIVER SWIM A 0.5 mile swim in the Hudson. Must be 15 years or older. 9/29, 8am. South Cove (on the river bet. First and Third Place).
