Coming to a Screen Near You: Giant Festival of Little Movies
POSTED September 1, 2007

It is decidely different sort of film festival that comes to Lower Manhattan this month.
Tropfest@Tribeca, which screens Sept. 23 at the World Financial Center, is a festival of shorts that annually asks filmmakers to either incorporate or make reference to a specific item. This year the item/word/theme is “slice” (think slice of life, or pizza).
Sixteen films, none of them longer than seven minutes, were selected for the juried festival this year. The winning filmmaker will receive a $10,000 prize and a trip for two to Australia.
The festival, now the largest festival of film shorts in the world, was founded in Australia in 1993 by John Polson, an actor and director. It debuted Downtown last year as part of the Tribeca Film Festival.
“This is not meant to be a highbrow event,” Polson said. “It’s not for intellectuals and cinema aficionados. It’s a festival for the general public, for people to just come and have a nice time outside watching a lot of short films.”The festival is free. Screenings start at 8 p.m. Live bands will perform beginning at 5 p.m.
