Botany and Medicine in Early America

American Eden: David Hosack, Botany, and Medicine in the Garden of the Early Republic

Presented by Victoria Johnson

THURSDAY, SEPT. 12, 6:30pm

At Fraunces Tavern Museum, 54 Pearl St.

Remembered mainly as the doctor chosen by both Hamilton and Burr to attend their famous duel, Dr. David Hosack’s other achievements are often forgotten. In this lecture, Johnson will discuss Hosack’s lesser known legacy as the founder of the country’s first public botanical garden, who dedicated himself to training the next generation of American doctors and naturalists.

American Eden was a New York Times Notable Book of 2018, a finalist for the 2018 National Book Award in Nonfiction, and a finalist for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in History.
