Cande Aguilar: barrioPOP at 81 Leonard
"Cande Aguilar: barrioPOP" at 81 Leonard Gallery is a retrospective that charts the development of the South Texas artist's style, called barrioPOP. Inspired by the Mexican-American culture of Brownsville, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley, Aguilar uses humorous juxtapositions of pop-cultural references that celebrate the neighborhood, or barrio, where he grew up.
Aguilar has exhibited widely in museums and galleries in the U.S. and Europe. This is his first solo show in New York.
81 Leonard Gallery is a new artist-run space founded by Nancy Pantirer, and gallery director Elaine Mitchell.
