FOR THE FAMILY: Make "Freedom Birds"

Paint, build, craft, or collage, using familiar and unusual materials. Inspired by the museum’s exhibitions and local artists, MOCACREATE explores different themes every month.

For January, the theme is based on the experience of Chinese immigrants to America who were detained aboard the Golden Venture. Unsure of their futures, they created “freedom birds” out of any materials they could find. Using paper, glue, and flour, visitors construct a paper mache animal that stands for freedom, equality, unity or friendship.

Free with museum admission ($10; seniors, students, and children 2 and, $5)
