'Gay New York' Exhibit at Poets House

"Bethesda Fountain" by Nicolas Buffon

Paintings and miniature constructions by sculptor and painter Nicholas Buffon of vital sites of gay community-building are on display at Poets House in Battery Park City.

In his show,  "Gay New York: Walt Whitman to the Present," Buffon memorializes over 30 historic and contemporary landmarks, venues and bars in the city and elsewhere. Among them are Pfaff’s Beer Cellar (Walt Whitman’s favorite bar), an HIV testing van in Cleveland, and the High Line’s monumental installation of Zoe Leonard’s poem “I want a President” (at right).

The works are meant to place Whitman’s legacy in conversation with contemporary voices of gay activism.

The exhibition, running through Nov. 30, is free, handicap-accesible and open to the public.
