POLICE BEAT: Assaults on Cyclists, Bag Thefts

John and Front
Sept. 14, 9 a.m.

A man’s $3,000 Fuji bicycle was stolen from a parking lot, where he had chained it to a gate.

12 John
Sept. 13, 6 p.m.

A robber took $300 from the cash register at Gelato Ti Amo after threatening a 20-year-old female employee with a knife and shouting, “Open the register, I’m a robber.” The employee told police that the man had been in the store prior to the incident and had told her that he was going to go get some cash and come back. 

South and Wall
Sept. 10, 8 p.m.

While tending to his daughter, a man’s Trek Bicycle was stolen from the East River Esplanade. The thief fled north on South Street. In addition to the $3,000 bike, the perpetrator made off with the man’s $150 bag, which contained a Rolex watch, a laptop and an iPod, among other items.

Northbound ‘J’ train, near Fulton/Nassau station
Sept. 10, 11 a.m.

A thief attempted to swipe a 48-year-old woman’s pocketbook. The victim was able to hold onto her bag while screaming for help. The man fled the train at the Fulton Street stop.

Greenwich and Chambers
Sept. 10, 1:10 a.m.

A man left his wallet in the bathroom at McDonald’s. The wallet contained credit cards, a social security card and a driver’s license. 

Pier 15

Sept. 8, 8 p.m.

A thief swiped a woman’s wristlet wallet she had placed on a tabletop at the pier while taking photos. When she turned to retrieve the wallet, it was gone. The woman told police she had noticed a woman with a small child who had been sitting next to her walking away around the time of the incident. The wallet contained, among other items, five credit cards, earphones and a $113 Metrocard.

112 Fulton
Sept. 8, 5 p.m.

While shopping at Foot Mart, a woman’s wallet was stolen from inside of a shopping bag. Inside the wallet was an identification card, a health insurance card, a debit card and $200. The woman’s bank notified her later on of attempted usage on her debit card.  

‘A’ train, near Chambers Street station
Sept. 8, 5:15 a.m.

A man’s iPhone was stolen from his front pants pocket while he was sleeping.

Cliff and Fulton
Sept. 8, 4:04 a.m.

A 29-year-old man is under arrest for striking a 33-year-old man on the head with a 12-ounce bottle of beer and brandishing a knife at the Iron Horse bar and restaurant. The injured victim complained of a headache but refused medical attention.

1 North End Avenue
Sept. 7, 2:25 p.m.

A man’s $4,500 Giant bike and $100 bike lock were stolen.

Dey and Church
Sept. 5, 3:20 p.m.

A woman’s $300 purse, containing a wallet, two passports, $1,200 in plane tickets, credit and debit cards, a driver’s license, a cell phone, a digital camera and $150, was stolen. The woman told police she felt someone bump her on her left side while crossing the street.

91 Washington
Sept. 5, 2013, 11:35 a.m.

A thief swiped the pocketbook of the store owner of Petropolis, a pet store, that the victim had briefly left unattended. Inside the bag was her wallet, several credit cards, a driver’s license and $80.

50  Murray
Sept. 5, 9 a.m.

A 26-year-old woman was taking photos with her iPad at Whole Foods before placing it inside her pocketbook. While walking home shortly after, she realized the device was missing. The woman told police that she didn’t recall being bumped during her outing.

Dover and South
Sept. 4, 11:40 p.m.

Two males, one of them a teenager, were arrested for striking a 45-year-old man on a bicycle, causing the victim to fall. One of the perpetrators made away with the bike and the victim’s $500 iPhone.

Warren near North End
Sept. 4, 2:30 p.m.

A 22-year-old woman left her handbag unattended in a stroller while at the P.S. 89 playground. When returning to the stroller to retrieve her bag, she realized her wallet was missing. Inside the wallet was $300 in prescription medications, a $31 MetroCard, a college ID, an insurance card, a driver’s license, two debit cards and $280.

Watts and Greenwich
Sept. 3, 6:33 p.m.

A man’s Babboe City cargo bike, valued at $1,500 was stolen by two people seen riding in a red-and-white van. The bike had not been securely locked.

250 Vesey
Sept. 1, 4:45 p.m.

A man’s two bicycles, valued at $2,000 and $1,000, were stolen from a bike rack.

South Ferry (No. 1) station
Sept. 1, 1:10 p.m.

A thief swiped a woman’s wallet from her bag, which carried a debit card, a credit card, a driver’s license and $200. The woman remembered being bumped in the turnstile area.

Stone and Bridge
Aug. 30, 8:35 p.m.

A 65-year-old man riding his bike on State Street, toward the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, was punched in the face by a pedestrian. The man fell to the ground, at which point the assailant rode away on the bike. The victim was taken to New York-Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital.

97 Warren
Aug. 30, 2:30 p.m.

Upon leaving Barnes & Noble, a woman realized her wallet was missing from her bag, which she had placed in her stroller. Inside the bag was her wallet, a credit card, a debit card, an insurance card and $20. The woman later discovered that $38 in unauthorized charges were made to her credit card at Macy’s.

26 South William
Aug. 30, 1 p.m.

A thief stole a woman’s Couronne bag she had placed behind her chair at Luke’s Lobster. Inside the bag was a $500 Louis Vuitton wallet, a passport, a debit card, a credit card, keys and $800.
