'Summer Streets' Is Coming Downtown with a 270-foot Water Slide

A 270-foot water slide is coming to Foley Square. So are free soccer lessons and an interactive dance performance that resembles the board game, Candy Land.

The activities are all part of the 8th annual Summer Streets, which turns seven-miles of street, starting at Lafayette Street, near Reade, and continuing on to Park Avenue and into Central Park.

Here is a line-up of the Downtown happenings during the three-day festival on August 1, 8 and 15 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Slide the City: A heavily padded water slide for the whole family. Everyone is welcome to bring their own floats and water buckets. There will be live music and food and drinks will be sold. Participants must register in advance online at www.nyc.gov/summerstreets.

Choose freestyle or power soccer:  Join professional soccer players for interactive performances. (On Aug. 15.)

Freestyle soccer: Play with professional freestyle soccer players, participate in a 20-minute street soccer game or watch a performance by well-known freestyle soccer players Frankie Flo and Spinny Vinny.

Power soccer with Wheeling Forward:  Twenty- to 30-minute training sessions and live games for disabled persons. Also, watch practice games of power soccer teams from the United States Power Soccer Association. Non-disabled individuals are also invited to participate in the sessions with loaner power wheelchairs. On Aug. 15, join professional soccer players for interactive performances.

Historical Reenactors: Ben Franklin will visit Foley Square along with his sweetheart, Flora Hamilton, from the Mount Vernon House Museum.

Movement and sound installation by Teresa Fellion Dance Company  Visitors can walk through a world of movement  similar to the board game, Candy Land. At 26 Federal Plaza on Saturday, Aug. 15,  10–10:45 am, 11:05 –11:50 am and 12:15 –1 pm)
