Poetry Month Events
April is National Poetry Month. Panels and readings honoring poet George Oppen will take place Tuesday, April 8, from 3 to 9 p.m., at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center at 199 Chambers St. (Call Poet’s House at 212-431-7920 for information.) Free reading by poets Edward Hirsch, Marie Howe and Eugene Schlanger will be held Wednesday, April 16, at 6:30 p.m at Wall Street Rising, 55 Exchange Place, Suite 401. Photo ID is required. Call 212-425-INFO. And the staff of Poet’s House will be distributing poems along the waterfront between Vesey and Murray Streets in Battery Park City throughout the day on Thursday, April 17.
Interfaith Seder
Tribeca Spiritual Center celebrates Passover with a free interfaith abridged Seder led by Rabbi Roger Ross on Sunday, April 20, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at The Hallmark, 455 North End Ave. at Chambers Street. There will also be music and singing. The story of Emma Lazarus, whose poem is at the base of the Statue of Liberty, will be told. Reservations are required. Call 917-887-4816.
Lifeguard Training
The Community Center at Stuyvesant High School, 345 Chambers St., will be offering its annual five-day lifeguard training course beginning April 19 and running five Saturdays, from 2 to 8 p.m. Participants learn how to prevent and respond to emergencies at swimming pools and non-surf, open-water environments such as lakes and rivers. Passing a swimming test is required for taking the course. Students must be 15 years old by May 17. The fee is $350 plus $25 for pre-test. Space is limited. Call 646-210-4292 for information.
Teen Volleyball
The Community Center at Stuyvesant High School at 345 Chambers St. is offering volleyball games for teens Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. No experience required. The cost is $10. For information call 646-210-4292.
Gardening Volunteers
Battery Park City Parks Conservancy is looking for volunteers to work alongside its horticulturists on Wednesday mornings, 7:30 a.m. to noon, from May 7 through the end of October.
The park contains 400 species of flowers, shrubs and trees. Working with horticultural staff, volunteers learn gardening skills and gain insights into landscape management techniques that rely on non-toxic pesticides, beneficial insects and organic fertilizers. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Call Eileen Calvanese at 212-267-9700, ext. 364 for an application. The deadline is Friday, April 25.
The State of Feminism
“Feminism Today: From Betty Friedan to The Little Mermaid” will be discussed by mother and daughter literary duo Anne and Katie Roiphe on April 30 at 7 p.m. at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, 36 Battery Place. Tickets are $10 adults, $7 students/seniors, $5 members. Call 646-437-4202 for tickets.
Scottish Concert
Three Scottish bands—MacTalla Mór, the Pentland Caledonia Pipes & Drums, and the Red Hot Chili Pipers—will play a free concert in Hanover Square Park at Hanover Square and Pearl Street on April 4 at 5:30 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. the concert moves to Stone Street, where the Tartan Specials will play.
Yard Sale
Southbridge Towers Community Yard Sale will take place May 1, 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the courtyard off Fulton and Pearl Sts. Rain dates are May 15, 16 and 17.
De Peyster Statue
A 112-year-old statue of Abraham De Peyster, a former mayor of New Amsterdam, will soon be a permanent fixture in City Hall Park. The statue, originally located in Bowling Green, was moved to Hanover Square during subway renovations. It is now being moved to make way for the British Memorial Garden.
