Video Submissions
The nonprofit gallery Apexart is looking for short videos by artists, performers, athletes and others who push  physical, mental or emotional limits in their work. A related exhibition on reconstructive surgery and the objectification of the human body will be on display in conjunction with the videos. To participate, send in or drop off works to: apexart, Exhibitionist Video Submission, 291 Church St., New York, NY 10013 by Monday, June 2. Include your name, contact information and anything interesting about yourself, one paragraph explaining the work submitted, and a DVD of one or two works with a total combined length of no longer than 15 minutes.

Performance at WFC
Documentary filmmaker Diana Quinones Rivera and the Shua Group Performance Company will present Giant Place Detail, a mass group performance and documentary film about the life of the Winter Garden and World Financial Center Performances are Thursday through Saturday, May 8–10, at 8:30 p.m. The audience meets at Starbucks in the World Financial Center, 220 Vesey St. May 8–June 14, 7 a.m.–11 p.m. in the Winter Garden. New Music Festival
The New York Art Ensemble launches its seventh annual festival of cutting-edge music at the Flea Theater. Five performances will highlight important trends in today’s  music scene. May 7: Ethel, “America’s favorite string band,” performs rock, blues, classical, and jazz music. May 8: Gregor Huebner and Mike Block perform original works for strings and other instruments. May 9: Theo Bleckmann performs a cappella, electronically processed and improvised vocal works. May 10: New Kids on the Block–Generation Y, a sextet, performs original works.  May 11: Monsters on the Loose! performs with violinist Mary Rowell and pianist Geoffrey Burleson. 9/11 Benefits Expanded
City officials announced last month that the New York City 9/11 benefit program will now cover counseling and medication costs for people affected by the events of Sept. 11. The program covers a four-year period beginning January 2, 2007. For city residents who lost family members, were injured on Sept. 11 below Canal St., worked at the site or attended school nearby, the coverage will be unlimited. For others who can show that their symptoms are caused by Sept. 11, therapy reimbursements will be capped at $3,000 and medication at $1,500.

Kushner at Museum
Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of the bestseller, “When Bad Things Happen to Good People,” will read from his new book “Overcoming Life’s Disappointments” at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, 36 Battery Pl., May 28 at 6:30 p.m. $10 adults, $7 students/seniors.

Community Center
Manhattan Youth will conduct open houses on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. during May. Information and registration forms for the wide variety of programs that begin June 1 will be available. Manhattan Youth is at 120 Warren St. Check manhattanyouth.org for details.

Backpacks for Kids
Battery Park City Cares will host a benefit for First Day NY on May 9 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Chevys at 102 North End Ave. and Vesey St. First Day NY supports students living in New York City shelters on their first day of school. The group gives each student a backpack containing school supplies and new clothes. The benefit will feature children’s games, dancing, snacks, a cash bar and a raffle. Suggested donation is $10, but admission for children is free.

BPC Goes Wireless
As of this month, visitors to Battery Park City’s Wagner Park can bring their laptops and connect to the Internet. The free wireless hotspot, which will extend from Pier A to First Place, was installed by NYCWireless, the nonprofit group that installed wireless hotspots at the Winter Garden, South Street Seaport, City Hall Park, Bowling Green Park, and elsewhere in the city.

Music at Hallmark
The Hallmark in Battery Park City will host a free concert and lecture on May 8 from 1:45 to 4 p.m. The presentation, entitled “Culture and the Melting Pot—Classical, Modern and World Music: Embracing the Folk Tradition,” will include performances by harpist Bridget Kibbey and mandolinist Joseph Brent, as well as lectures on the history of traditional folk music.

Big Dog/Little Dog
The neighborhood’s small dogs may soon have a run of their own, thanks to a  resolution adopted by Community Board 1 last month. The board asked that a new dog run planned for Hudson River Park include a separate run for small dogs. Small dogs who wish to play with larger dogs will still use the main run.

Presidential Pictures
More than 80 photographs of American Presidents from the archives of the Associated Press are on display at the Federal Hall National Memorial at 26 Wall St. The free exhibit includes photographs of President Kennedy and former President Eisenhower in conference and the attempted assassination of President Reagan. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
