I.S. 89 Principal, Ellen Foote, Loses Son In Bicycle Accident
POSTED DECEMBER 1, 2007

Just before midnight, on Nov. 17, Sam Hindy, 27, the son of I.S. 89’s principal, Ellen Foote, died in a freak bike accident on the Manhattan Bridge.
A young man full of intelligence, energy and adventure, Hindy had recently moved to New York from Boston to take a job at the ad agency, Double Click.
Three days after the tragedy, more than 500 people came to a memorial service at the Picnic House in Prospect Park. There was beer from the Brooklyn Brewery co-owned by Foote’s husband, Stephen Hindy. And hors d’oeuvres were served, though there was little enthusiasm for them.
Stephen Hindy told the sorrowful crowd that it was not their words, but their hugs that comforted them.
And there were plenty of those. Friends, co-workers and neighbors stood in line to embrace the parents.
From Tribeca, there were teachers, former principals, the staffs from both P.S. and I.S. 89, parents of children who attended the school and parents whose whose youngsters had graduated years before.
“Thank you all for being here,” Foote told the guests. “It’s pretty overwhelming but it means a lot to Steve and me to have you all here to celebrate Sam’s life with us.”
Foote reminisced about her son, with funny stories about his rambunctiousness as a child, how she and her husband worried before their first parent teacher conference, about his sweetness, his recent sadness over the death of his beloved cat and his close friendship with his sister. Many in the room laughed with her, and then cried.
Speaking at a meeting of Community Board 1 that same night, Bob Townley, director of Manhattan Youth praised Foote’s work as a teacher at P.S. 234 and her leadership at I.S. 89 following 9/11. “It’s difficult for me to understand why a person who has given so much to our children should lose her own son,” he said.
The family requests that any donations be made in Sam’s name to Transportation Alternatives, www.transalt.org
