A Tribeca restaurateur pleaded guilty last month to stealing $1.1 million in taxes from New York State.
Eric Tevrow, who owns Fresh restaurant at 105 Reade St., pleaded guilty to reporting only 15 percent of sales tax from the restaurant. At Shore, a restaurant Tevrow ran on Murray Street until 2004, he only reported 7 percent of his sales tax revenue. Tevrow reported none of the sales tax from a third restaurant, Coast, which he ran on Liberty Street until 2005.
All told, Tevrow stole $979,759 in state sales tax from the three restaurants over a four-and-a-half-year period. He also stole $133,312 in payroll taxes from Fresh and Coast.
After an investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, Tevrow pleaded guilty to Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, for which he will receive a conditional discharge, and Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, for which he will serve a four-month sentence.
Under the terms of his plea Tevrow must pay back the $1.1 million in taxes as well as accrued interest and penalties, which could add an additional $1 million.
