Trinity Churchyard, Broadway at Wall
The Lower Manhattan Historical Association will celebrate American Revolutionary War Victories of Saratoga and Yorktown on Sunday Oct. 15 at 2:30 p.m., two days before the 240th anniversary of the surrender by British General Gentleman Johnny Burgoyne of his 10,000 man force to American General Horatio Gates, the commanding general at the Battle of Saratoga, on October 17, 1777.
The ceremony will be held in historic Trinity Church Cemetery [1] at Broadway and Wall where there is a marker to General Gates. Several feet away is the tomb of Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the United States Treasury and a key aide to George Washington who led the climactic charge against redoubt 10 at the Battle of Yorktown on October 19, 1781 thereby forcing the capitulation of Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis’ British forces later that very day.
