A 58-year-old man was rescued from the Hudson River by a NY Waterway crew Friday morning near Pier 25 after police say he stole a yellow cab in front of the Conrad Hotel in Battery Park City.

According to police, the man, who they described as emotionally disturbed, drove the three blocks from 102 North End Ave. to 22 River Terr., then proceeded to jump into the river. NY Waterway crew members threw him a life ring and dropped a roll-up ladder for his rescue. He was arrested by waiting cops near the North Cove Marina and taken to Bellevue Hospital for observation. Charges are pending.
NY Waterway commended the crew of the Thomas Kean, Capt. Dave Dort, along with deckhands Gregorio Pages and Pietro Romano, for assisting in the rescue.
“The crew did an excellent job. They did what they were trained to do,” Dort said in a NY Waterway statement. “For us, this is all in a day’s work.”
This was Dort’s second rescue in the last two years, NY Waterway said.
