Pandemic cited as reason for its demise
Marriott’s W New York-Downtown, at 8 Albany St., with its dramatic views overlooking the World Trade Center and September 11 Memorial, announced that it will close on Oct. 13, a casualty of the pandemic.
In a filing [1] with the New York State Department of Labor, the hotel's parent company reported that “unforeseeable business circumstances prompted by COVID-19” was the reason for the closure of the 214-key hotel, which would mean the layoff of all 134 employees. “Separations” began on March 7, the company said. New York Business Journal [2] first reported the story.
According to STR, which tracks hospitality industry performance, hotel occupancy in New York City for the week ending July 25 was 35.9 percent, up about one-half percent from the week before.
