Washington Market Park’s Halloween Parade and its Pumpkin Carving Contest, as well as the BPC Dogs Association’s Halloween Puppy Parade are three of the holiday’s most popular Downtown traditions. Last weekend’s events drew even more celebrators than usual—more dogs, more pumpkins, more decked-out kids—following a year of pent-up demand for fun. “I think everyone says the same thing,” remarked Erica Martini, who runs the Pumpkin Carving Contest. “They’re happy to be able to get out and do something now, to celebrate a holiday.”

Washington Market Park Halloween Parade
Tribeca’s longest running annual event again featured the Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Marching Corps leading the way down Greenwilch Street and into the park for a rousing concert. Even the muddy grounds and shortened celebration (there were no games this year) couldn’t put a damper on the turnout or fun.
Battery Park City Puppy Parade
There was a chef, an angel, a lantern fly and a Harry Potter, to name just a tiny few of the doggie disguises at the 19th annual parade and costume competition, which began at South Cove and proceeded along the esplanade to the volleyball court at North Cove for judging. Prizes were awarded for best costume, best owner and dog combo, best dog team costume, and best tail waggers.
Washington Market Park Pumpkin Carving Contest
A record 67 pumpkins populated the park’s pumpkin patch this year, viewable, like a window display, from behind the fence on Greenwich Street. Prizes were given for Overall Winner, Overall Runner-Up, Most Creative, Funniest, Scariest, Cutest and Most Realistic. Some are shown below (with only first names provided).
