Marriott’s W New York-Downtown, at 8 Albany St., with its dramatic views overlooking the World Trade Center and September 11 Memorial, announced that it will close on Oct. 13, a casualty of the pandemic.

In a filing with the New York State Department of Labor, the hotel's parent company reported that “unforeseeable business circumstances prompted by COVID-19” was the reason for the closure of the 214-key hotel, which would mean the layoff of all 134 employees. “Separations” began on March 7, the company said. New York Business Journal first reported the story.

According to STR, which tracks hospitality industry performance, hotel occupancy in New York City for the week ending July 25 was 35.9 percent, up about one-half percent from the week before.
