UPDATE: 5/28/15

The victim later died, date unknown, according to an NYPD spokesman.

A man who was pulled from the Hudson River near Tribeca's Pier 26 Tuesday night remained in critical condition late Wednesday afternoon, according to a police spokesman.

FDNY divers dragged the man, said to be in his 30s, to the Hudson River Park esplanade, where he was placed on a stretcher and given chest compressions that continued as he was wheeled to a waiting ambulance. The victim was taken to New York Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital.

Twelve FDNY units responded to the scene following calls from several witnesses who reported seeing the man in the water, drifting north in a 2 knot current, according to an FDNY radio transmission. Within minutes after two divers descended into the murky waters, around 10:50 p.m., the man’s naked and seemingly lifeless body was pulled up to the esplanade.

Police are not releasing the victim's name.

Offensive Rescue Photo

I read each issue of your paper and love the local news that you share.  I was terribly disappointed and offended by the image of the "river rescue" where the deceased man's photo was shown.  I think it was distasteful to show this horrific picture and disrespectful to the family of the deceased man.  There is no need to include a photo of a deceased drowned man in a local paper.  I would urge you to use better discretion when selecting images for the paper.  You are wonderful for local news and shouldn't succumb to sensationalized images.

Thank you.
