Flames and heavy smoke rose from the roof of the 7-story Tribeca Film Center on Friday night, Oct. 6. The dramatic scene at 375 Greenwich St., beginning around 10:30 p.m., drew dozens of onlookers and a heavy Fire Department response. It also led to the temporary evacuation of Tribeca Grill on the ground floor. But the rooftop fire was nowhere near as bad as it looked, according to a building security official.

There was “minimum to no damage from the fire,” Glenn Cunningham, who is in charge of security for both the Tribeca Film Center and adjoining Greenwich Hotel, told the Trib. And the firefighters managed to put out the flames without damaging the building, he said.

“Great response and work from the Fire Department,” Cunningham said.

The FDNY reported no injuries.

Cunningham said the flames shot up from a fireplace in the hotel and through the chimney but he did not know the cause. The Fire Department also did not give a cause.

Twelve units and 60 fire and EMS personnel responded to the blaze, which was brought under control at 11:21 p.m., about 50 minutes after it was reported, the Fire Department said.
