Mom and Child Struck by E-Bike Rider While Crossing Broadway

A mother, 42, was pushing her 2-year-old son in a stroller through the intersection of Broadway and Park Place around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, when a man on an electric bike, believed to be a Grubhub delivery driver, struck them, knocking over the stroller and throwing the child to the ground, according to police. The mother and child, who police say had the right-of-way when they were hit, were taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.

The Daily News identified the mother as Betsy Reed and quoted her husband, Toby Nirens, as saying that the child suffered a bruise to the forehead and Reed received bruises and scratches but both "are fine."

"The Grubhub driver stopped for a second, my wife was cursing a little bit and said, 'Don't go anywhere.' And he said, 'I'm going to park my bike and I'll be right back.' And then he just fled," Nirens told the News. Police say the bicycle rider fled the scene without exchanging information with the mother.
