Borough of Manhattan Community College’s cafeteria on Tuesday became a stage for the infectious rhythms of African-style drumming and the precision moves of young dance troupes. The event also included stepping and choral pieces. It was the beginning of the school’s annual Black History Month celebration.

Each February the school hosts a series of events, discussions, workshops and cultural showcases that get a rousing kickoff from middle and high schoolers who take classes in African dance and drumming.
“This month presents us with the opportunity to celebrate the vast diversity of African heritage, acknowledging not just the past, but also the ongoing narrative that impacts us today,” BMCC President Anthony Munroe told the audience.
“As we celebrate this month,” he added, “let us do so with pride and purpose, knowing that in honoring our past, we empower our future.”
