Pier 26 in Tribeca became the birthing place for five tiny goslings last week. Mother goose was sitting on her nest beneath the pier walkway, just out of reach of the incoming tide, when the Trib photographed hatchling number one’s first moments in the outside world.

The newborn emerged from one of six visible eggs while, nearby, stood a watchful father goose. Not long after, Battery Park City resident Kate Weissbacher, who had also been keeping an eye on the nest, stopped by to find the mother with a brood of five, which she then photographed. The next day she was back to record three of the goslings in the water, paddling their tiny webbed feet as mom and dad bobbed close by.
“I love that we can see nature and the city coexist on the pier,” Weissbacher wrote in an email.
